10 Lines

I give voice to George Washington
Whose long gone voice I remember
As if it were my own.
His bravery
And courage
To lead a newly developed country
Is something I admire.
Washington was a hero
Who fought for this country
As if it were his own.

Green Light: Part ll

The Green Light

In my country
I saw the rich and the poor
The good and the bad
The fat and the skinny
The ugly and the pretty
But most importantly,
I saw the pain which most people suffered.
My parents knew what needed to be done,
And soon enough I was on my way to a brighter future.
Nothing could prepare me for the long journey ahead of me.
Roads that seemed ENDLESS.
The blazing sun stroking my head,
Causing sweat to drip down my face.
The trip was tiring
But I knew it would soon all be over.
Life was different in the United States.
The first thing I noticed was the people.
White people everywhere.
The food, the music, the people, the world was different.
At age 15, I was still unsure of who I was or what I wanted to become.
Back in Mexico, my future would be chosen for me;
In America, I was free to become my own person.
So I got a job, where I was treated with such respect
And I felt superior.
Some days were great,
While others were horrible.
Yet I wasn't surprised.
I knew leaving my home would come with its rewards
And inevitable consequences.
Now here I stand,
Twenty years later.
I might say I am living a wonderful life.
I live in a great home with my family.
To this day, I am still respected,
And I feel superior.
America is exactly what I expected.
I see the rich and the poor
The good and the bad
The fat and the skinny
The ugly and the pretty
But most importantly,
I see Success and power.
For me to fulfill my American Dream,
I still have a long way to go.

SUMMARY:

Life as a Mexican American for my interviewee was somewhat expected, meaning he didn't deal with much surprise. The transition from Mexico to the United States was overwhelming, but very rewarding in the long run. He was able to achieve his many hopes and desires he had when he first came to the United States. To him, America is not corrupt, but a nice place he can call home.
